Equality Duty

At Greys Education Centre we welcome our duties under the Equality Act 2010.

The school’s general duties, with regards to equality are:

  • Eliminating discrimination
  • Fostering good relationships
  • Advancing equality of opportunity

We will not discriminate against, harass or victimise any pupil, prospective pupil, member of staff or other member of the school community because of their:

  • Gender
  • Race
  • Disability
  • Religion or belief
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender reassignment
  • Pregnancy or maternity

Greys Education Centre aims to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, with special emphasis on promoting equality, diversity and eradicating prejudicial incidents for pupils and staff.

Our school is committed to not only eliminating discrimination, but also increasing understanding and appreciation for diversity.

Our extensive work on Unicef Rights Respecting has embedded a firm understanding of equality with regards to children understanding their own and other human rights.

Greys Education Centre recognises that certain groups in society have historically been disadvantaged on account of unlawful discrimination they have faced on the basis of their race, gender, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age.

Our Equality Policy outlines a range of actions to eliminate prejudice, unlawful discrimination and victimisation within the school community and workforce.

Whilst continuously aiming to improve the implementation of equality related policies and procedures, Greys Education Centre has identified the following specific objectives. We are committed to:

  • Analysis of behaviour data to review the representation of specific groups eg. ethnic minority, vulnerable and physically disabled and put in place strategies to tackle any issues highlighted.
  • Address any pupil progress issues specifically absence and/or additional need amongst pupils from any of our protected categories and ensure that curriculum and wider school experience is fully accessible.
  • Audit the involvement of ethnic minority pupils in ‘whole school life’ (clubs, extra-curricular activities, trips etc.) and if necessary develop strategies to address issues that are identified.
  • Audit the whole school curriculum, including reading materials, to ensure it is promoting positive images of ethnic minorities and includes topical issues such as Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ+, healthy relationships, mental health/wellbeing and current news to allow for and encourage discussion with pupils.
  • Ensure that all pupils in school experience and celebrate the multicultural country in which they live.

Greys Education Centre is a Unicef Silver Rights Respecting School. Ofsted rated ‘Good’ (February 2024).
