Outdoor Education

At Greys we are able to utilise many of the outdoor education facilities and environments in our local area. These include excellent mountain bike trails, beautiful local parks, woodlands and hills for hiking, the River Ouse and lakes for water based activities and local areas for setting up tents, outdoor cooking and campcraft skills.

Skills and knowledge acquired from the curriculum can be applied to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Pupils can work towards their Bronze Award, completing Volunteering, Physical and Skills sections and preparing for their Expedition section.

The aims of Greys Outdoor Education Curriculum are to build self-esteem, confidence, resilience, determination and independence in all pupils.

The curriculum enables pupils to gain access to many local leisure facilities, the natural environment, wildlife and people using these local leisure areas. This exposes pupils to the wider world around them,  helps them conduct themselves appropriately and appreciate the opportunities available to them.

We aim to let learners experience new activities in new places and allow them to enjoy, explore, experiment, set targets, take charge and push through limits.

This enables pupils to be active encourages their physical development and helps them take responsibility for their own health.

Pupils develop the ideas of personal responsibility, risk management and risk benefit.

We strive to develop pupils personal, social and emotional development and encourage collaboration, teamwork and empathy.

Pupils will be more informed and confident to undertake outdoor activities in their own time and will be safer as a result of previous learning. Pupils realise the need of individual and community efforts to maintain outdoor spaces, to value positive relations and foster a moral duty to behave appropriately towards others.

Pupils will face new challenges and approach them as a positive learning experience, developing attitudes and emotions which they can transfer into their wider learning and lives outside of school in the future.
